The second annual Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival was a musical marathon held at the gorgeous Sunshine Grove in Okeechobee, Florida this past Thursday through Sunday. For the second year in a row Okeechobee sold-out in advance of gates opening as more than 35,000 festivalgoers witnessed dozens of sets each day, took part in various workshops, enjoyed numerous art installations and took actions that made HeadCount’s Participation Row a huge success. Musically, organizers presented a diverse slate of performances that ran through nearly all hours of the day and night.
Highlights included a stellar “PoWoW!” collaboration/superjam featuring Michael McDonald, Solange, Vulfpeck, GRiZ, Eric Krasno and more, the teaming of Usher and The Roots, rockers The Revivalists continuing their set after frontman David Shaw accidentially split his head open and Sturgill Simpson debuting a new stripped-down band. There was also Moon Taxidelivering a powerful cover of “Killing In The Name,” Vulfpeck showing off some new material, Perpetual Groove ending a career-spanning set with “All My Friends,” Allen Stone collaborating with the Blind Boys Of Alabama and Pretty Lights rocking the Now Stage.
